The Art Of Letting go

Avoiding the Micromanager Trap

Leaders and Dreamers

A thought catalogue from Nadia Lotter.

Dear Leaders and Dreamers,

This morning, I watched a bird build its nest twig by twig. It reminded me of how we often approach our work, meticulously placing each piece in what we believe is its perfect spot. Then, I noticed the bird’s partner, perched nearby, probably sipping a tiny bird latte, watching with trust and patience. It struck me as a beautiful metaphor for leadership and the delicate dance of letting go.

Micromanagement is like trying to place every twig in someone else’s nest. We convince ourselves it’s helpful, but in reality, it stifles creativity, erodes trust, and leaves us exhausted. The nest may get built, but it’s no longer a shared creation. So, how do we avoid this trap?

1. Embrace Trust: Trust is the cornerstone of any relationship, professional or personal. Believe in your team’s abilities. They might not place the twigs exactly where you would, but that’s okay. Their nest, built with their hands, will have its own unique beauty and strength.

2. Set Clear Expectations: Communicate your vision clearly, then step back. Define the what and why, but let your team figure out the how. This empowers them to take ownership and innovate.

3. Practice Patience: The bird doesn’t hover over every twig its partner places. It trusts the process. Give your team the time and space to find their rhythm and solutions. Mistakes might happen, but they’re part of growth.

4. Focus on the Big Picture: Shift your focus from the minute details to the broader goals. What truly matters is the completed nest, not the exact placement of each twig. Regularly remind yourself of the bigger picture and let that guide your interactions.

5. Foster Open Communication: Create an environment where team members feel comfortable sharing their ideas and challenges. Listen more than you speak. Sometimes, all a person needs to soar is the assurance that their voice is heard.

6. Reflect on Your Role: Ask yourself, “Am I helping or hovering?” Leadership is not about doing everything yourself but enabling others to do their best. Reflect on your actions and be willing to adjust your approach.

Today, let’s celebrate the art of letting go. Let’s honor the nests built by hands other than our own, appreciating the diversity and creativity they bring. As you go about your day, imagine yourself as the bird’s partner, watching with trust and patience, allowing the nest to take shape in its own beautiful way. Maybe even bring your team a latte today?

With good vibes,

Nadia

Take Away: Leadership is about guiding and inspiring, not controlling. Embrace the freedom that comes with trust, and watch how high your team can soar.
